There is nothing I enjoy more than making pretty things with shapes and color. Right. If it were that simple then you would not need goons like me to get your peojects done. It might not be that simple, but it is something we are good at and proud of.
Within the first 5 seconds of seeing your project, a user can tell whether or not they like or dislike it. Let’s face it, we have all been to a site that looks just terrible, and the whole time you are struggling to use it you cannot help but notice the gigantic flamming skull with the glowing eyes in both the top-right and top-left hand corners of the screen. If you are anything like me, that is probably the last time you signed up for that online bank…
The point I am trying to make is, you need to combine a comfortable look and feel while at the same time convey your meaning to the user. That first 5 seconds will make or break your project.
So it is about 1:15am and you are still up struggling to get your Quark XPress file to open in Adobe to save as a .pdf for tomrorow morning’s presentation. One question, why? No, I didn’t mean “why Quark?” I mean’t why not leave it up to us.
If you could not relate to that story, try an easier one…Ok, so you heard from someone 300dpi, so you got that going on. Someone else told you something about “C-M-Y-J”, or was it “K”, who knows. You saw an ad in Sunday’s paper for a Kinkos special, so you head down on the bright to get your project printed, and drop it off. They tell you to come back in about an hour, and you say “Ok!” The next part usually goes a little something like this:
Sales Clerk: Here you go Mr. Smith
You: What the hell is this?
Sales Clerk: Oh, about that, you must have forgot to rasterize your fonts, or forgot to include them on the disc, oh oh, and then didn’t have any more of that paper you wanted
You: So what you’re telling me is you dont’t have Comic Sans installed on your computer and instead of the embosed paper I wanted you gave me one with Cousin Eddy from Christmas Vacation on it saying “Bingo”
Sales Clerk: There is no need to get so angry, *Goshh* our job is really hard!
