Revisiting: I’m a Mac, I’m a PC
May 28th, 2008
I had written a post a little while back, about how I am in the market to get a new computer and wanted to go the Mac route. Thank you to all for you input so far. My reason for revisiting this topic is because I was thinking about some concerns I was having:
- If I got an iMac, what happens if the screen is damaged? Is the computer pretty much done?
- Same goes for the Macbook Pro, what if the keypad breaks?
Now I know as far as the keypad goes, that can happen (and does) with any laptop, but I was more concerned with the iMac screen, and how it is all in one. I really like the idea that it is compact and all together. I suppose you could just buy another display and run it just as a machine…Does warranty cover damage or problems with the iMac display? Is it worth the extra money for the warranty in the first place? Would a desktop be the best, or safest bet still?
Sound off like you got a pair.

Hello Matt,
I just wanted to let you know a little about your concerns. Let’s start with the easy one, the Macbook Pro: If your keyboard breaks, bring it into the Apple store and they will fix it. How much? We will get to that later. As far as the iMac, if the screen breaks, you can plug it into an external screen or, have it replaced.
Now, as far as AppleCare (their protection plan) it is a pretty good idea. For the iMac it’s 169 and th Macbook Pro, 349. That covers anything but acciedental damage. The iMac can be pulled apart and a new one can be put in. Again, if it’s your fault, you have to pay it. It’s usually $310 plus parts, but check with the store, same thing wiht the Macbook Pro. See the usefull-ness of the plan? If it’s not your fault, it’s fixed, for free. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.
And just in case you are wondering, yes, I work for Apple.
Good luck!
Kevin
Hey Kevin, thanks for the reply, I was beginning to think no one cared, or saw the post heh.
I am usually skeptical about purchasing any protection plan, or warranty, but I think in this case it is justified, and worth it.
I think I am going to go for the iMac. It is more in my price range, and I have enough laptops.
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks again!
Oh, by the way, I am assuming you do not work at an Apple store in RI or MA?
Great idea. The 24″ is a georges screen and you will love it! It packs plenty of power and speed and the thing just looks great. And, no, I work in California. Let me know if you have any questions.
Kevin
Thanks Kevin for your help. If you know anyone at the Providence Place Mall Apple Store, let me know heh
I’m in the exact same position at the moment and am seriously swayed towards the iMac. I can’t see me breaking it - I often smack my PC monitor with anger but that’s because it’s Windows, whereas I’m more likely to hug my iMac monitor.
However, it’s an amazing and expensive piece of kit so I think I’ll get the Applecare just to be on the safe side.
Macs away!
