All things Rhode Island

December 5th, 2007

Being from Rhode Island, I am well aware of all the stereotypes, jokes, and questions like “wait, isn’t that like off of Massachusetts somewhere?”. We have been called “The armpit of New England”, “Little New York”, and all other sorts of things. To the rest of us, it is known simply as home.

Location, location, location

I am not going to give you a history lesson on Rhode Island, but there is plenty of information out there if you are interested. I am however going to talk to you about what makes it so special and a great place to visit, any time of year. Chances are if you have driven to Boston from New York or vice-versa you have driven right through the mecca. With only about 2 hours from our southern border and less than 1 hour from the north, Rhode Island is a great middle ground for 2 of the largest cities in the United States. I would not recommend a Rhody to NYC commute, but one to Boston is not bad at all, in fact many people do it each and every day, including myself. Many up and coming entrepreneurs have dismissed their pricey and sometimes not so well accommodated apartments in Boston and instead have moved into one many new hi-rise condos, or luxury lofts in Providence and surrounding areas. With only a short stint on the commuter rail, you can be in Boston in about an hour without the hassle of traffic, and home again at a reasonable hour, not like the rest of us that drive in and out…

Only in Rhode Island

Some of you might know that we have a nickname, “The Ocean State”, which is really just a tourism ploy, but in all actuality we have a very commanding coastline, with pristine beaches just a hop, skip and a jump from the capital. Here is a short little list of things you can only find in RI:

Some of the above you might have heard of, and most probably not. In addition to the above list we also have this thing called “Waterfire”, where these floating fire pits are ignited, thousands of people come and watch it, listen to music and kiss. Over the years it has become more and more commercialized, but it used to be a nice place to take a date and make your move.

So now that I have shared some of my favorite things about my state and why you should come here and check it out, let me know something about yours. We have not been on a vacation in quite some time and would like to get out there this summer. Give me some the scoop.
