An Event Apart - 2008

March 2nd, 2008

I have been meaning to write a post specifically about this amazing, life changing event coming to a town near you, so here it is.

It is that time again. The time when you, or your gracious employers, cough up the dough to stake your claim and grab a seat to hear some of the best in the Web and Graphic Design Community speak their mind on the latest and greatest in the business. Amongst the speakers are:

  • Eric Meyer
  • Jeffrey Zeldman
  • Jason Santa Maria
  • Cameron Moll
  • Dave Shea

Just to name a few.

Things to know if you sign up

My boss and I were able to attend this past year (2007) in Boston, and it was absolutely worthwhile. The days start promptly at 8:30am, which was a little bit of a pain coming from RI, but I managed. Parking can be a hassle, depending on the location and your method of transportation, so plan ahead, which also ties in with timing your arrival. Adobe was, and is sponsoring the event so that means great food (2 meals and usually a snack per day), coffee and other drinks and munchies. Grab a good seat, turn your phone on vibrate, enjoy the Wi-Fi, take notes, listen, repeat.

The main focus of the conference is enforcing the importance of design with web standards. The speakers put together interesting presentations to accompany their well thought out speeches, as well as a nice booklet to follow along with, and take with you when you go. I have often used the booklet as a reference from notes that I took during on topics of interest.

You will probably leave with a bunch more knowledge that you came in with, if not then a good reinforcing of your already solid practices. Another great part of the event is the social networking opportunities you have at your disposal. Not everyone there is a designer, or developer. Some are just business owners looking to get more information on maybe how to take their company to the next level, perhaps a redesign? This is your chance to let them know your credentials, and possibly score a job…

If none of this sounds good, then you are an awful person. Just go for the great books that they have for sale in the front lobby then.

Have you been? If so share your experiences with us. Want to know more? Just ask.

Nice post. I have been thinking about going myself this year. I probably should make a decision soon, in case tickets sell out.

    Was it packed last year?

Hey Tim, thanks. I am just telling it as I remember it.

Yeah, if you have the chance to go definitely go.

It was very packed, and I am almost sure it was sold out.
