While in theory, and from an educational standpoint I do not have a problem with CSS Frameworks. On the other hand, I do not personally see a point in relying on one that someone else made, for my projects.
First things first.

Sorry guys, I only have a half day today so there will not be a Friday’s Five.
Bad news aside for a moment, I did do some minor/major changes to the site this week, as you might have noticed.
Changes:
- Sidebar has been relocated to the right now
- Added a “ShareThis” link to the bottom of each post, so you can…share it
- Removed the old “quicklinks” section and replaced it with “popular posts“
- Changed the colors a bit. Before there was too much blue, and this is part of an idea I am working o, so it is a work in progress
Anyway, there were some other minor things, but nothing too whacky. Have an awesome weekend.
What do you think about the changes?

I’ve gotten a few emails, and spoke with a couple of people about this, and I think it applies to everything, not just design. What I am eluding to is when you are too afraid to try things, for fear you will have wasted your shot at doing your best.
A ship in a harbor is safe, but what good is a ship in a harbor?

As often as I enjoy hearing new music, it is always nice to be able to turn to a favorite artist in times of need…Which is why I wanted to share with you some of my musically inspiring artists for coding, and designing.
Slayer is definitely a good Monday canidadate. You need to get in, get your coffee, and get back into the swing of things. Slayer will definitely help jump start the thought process. They also work out well for when you are in a bind, or under a strong deadline. “REIGN IN BLOOOOOOOOOOOOD”. When you are in mood to just kick back and try out some new design ideas, 311 works wonders. Another close second would have to be Portishead, followed by Jolie Holland, and the Allman Brothers.
I really enjoy going to Purevolume and just searching by genre for different and new artists. Songza is also a great resource.
Top 5 Purevolume artists I frequent:
- Impending Doom
- A Life Once Lost
- Despised Icon
- See You Next Tuesday
- Beneath The Massacre
Ok, so I’ve shared some of mine, what about you guys? What gets you motivated, and why?

Strange title indeed…I just wanted to send out a little update, and let you all know that there are some plans in the works for this site.
As you currently can see, I have been using this site as both a blog and a portfolio, but I think it would be much better to have a separation between the two. This is why I have decided to get my old domain back and re-register mattrossidesigns.com, and leave ifohdesigns.com to focus on my blogging.
What does this mean for you, the faithful?
Well, this site is going to be re-designed and engineered to perform better as a blog. Aside from performance enhancements, I am also happy to change this layout a bit. I like it, don’t get me wrong, but it is always exciting to announce a re-design.
In addition to the re-design of this site, you will also get a nice new site to view my portfolio on, that hopefully will better demonstrate my work.
Information…F…O…H…Designs
That is right. I am going to give out the acronym with the release of the new site. You might not care at all, but I think it is important in that it will make much more sense now that it is going to be a dedicated web design resource blog.
Stay tuned. (dramatic exit)

This is yet another thing that has been bothering me for quite some time now, that I just haven’t had the will power to address it. Well, I think it has pushed me over the edge. Why are people using Transitional DOCTYPES for new projects?
Stop and think about the title for a minute, would you please!
T-R-A-N-S-I-T-I-O-N-A-L It does not say “use this DOCTYPE if you are lazy“. No. This clearly states that it should be used for, wait for it, transitioning from legacy content that probably did not have a DOCTYPE to begin with, and now does to help give some order to the confusion. They are also there to say “hey, we have some presentational elements mixed within the markup”.
Taken from w3.org
This is the HTML 4.01 Transitional DTD, which includes
presentation attributes and elements that W3C expects to phase out
as support for style sheets matures. Authors should use the Strict
DTD when possible, but may use the Transitional DTD when support
for presentation attribute and elements is required.
When is this required you may ask? As stated above, when you are dealing with legacy content that is out of your control for the most part, as far as formatting goes. This definition clearly tells you out right to use a Strict DOCTYPE when at all possible. Still not convinced?
